ALBUQUERQUE - Today, Mark Chavez (pictured below) was convicted for the kidnapping and severe beating of a woman from 2006. The Bernalillo County jury found Chavez guilty of 1st Degree Kidnapping following a five day trial presided over by District Judge Charles Brown.

The 2006 kidnapping case had gone unsolved for almost a decade. The case was considered a cold case until it was re-investigated in 2014 by APD Cold Case Detective Rich Lewis and a DNA match from under the victim’s fingernails confirmed that Chavez was the offender.

Chavez faces a mandatory eighteen years in the Department of Corrections. The case was tried by Letitia Carroll Simms, Spirit Gaines, and Mark Probasco of the Gang Crime Unit of the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office.
